The majestic Flinders Ranges are often referred to as the backbone of South Australia running north / south for over 500 Kilometres through the centre of South Australia.  This 180 million year old range once as high as the South American Andes offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia with hundreds of peaks covered with ancient Cypress pines, creek beds lined with River Red Gums & the deep gorges that have made the Flinders Ranges famous.  Sir Hans Heysen, renowned South Australian landscape artist, once referred to the Flinders Ranges as mother nature with her bones laid bare.  The region is abundant with many native animal and bird species.

The spectacular geological formation known as Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges National Park is regarded as the “jewel in the crown” of South Australian tourism.  Our included 30 minute scenic flight is highly recommended as it is the only way to appreciate the “big picture” of Wilpena Pound.

 

Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the Northern Flinders Ranges is an area unique within Australia, a geologist’s playground, an area indescribably beautiful where the stark beauty of this arid region shows mother nature’s work at it’s best.  Craggy peaks, shear cliff walls & gorges that will leave you in awe.  The world famous Arkaroola Ridge Top Tour is a must do.  On clear nights you can tour the Galaxy with the Arkaroola Astronomical Observatory tours 14 inch optical telescope.  “Quoting the Former Governor of South Australia Sir Mark Oliphant “"The Northern Flinders Ranges exercise a subtle attraction to return upon any sensitive person who once visits the region."

 

Coober Pedy, the strange town where people live underground has to be seen to be believed.  The surrounding landscape where opal miners have  been digging for decades looks like a battle field or the surface of the moon, with what looks like bomb craters as far as the eye can see.  The Breakaways reserve to the north of town has been the location for a number of movies, we arrive as the sun is low in the west to take in the brilliant colour of this unusual landscape.  Naturally when in Coober Pedy the “Opal Capital of the world” you will have the opportunity to visit an Opal shop.

 

The Oodnadatta Track, from the smallest town in South Australia & the closest town to Lake Eyre for scenic flights over the lake, we travel down the track that follows the route of famous explorer John Mc Douall Stuart, the overland telegraph line & the “Old Ghan Railway”.  Interesting places along the route include Coward Springs, Mt. Hamilton an artesian mound spring, the Blanche Cup & The Bubbler Spring.  The old railway stations of  Curdimurka, the site of the Curdimurka Bi–annual outback ball, Marree & the original railhead town of Farina, now a ghost town.
